road trippin’ – guess where I went?

Friday I took a friend to the airport.  It was an early flight so it was only 9:30 am when I dropped him off.  I had a couple of choices:

1. Bum around airport town looking for something to do.

2. Drive home and hang out on the couch – did I mention I took the day off?

3. Drive to IKEA and Trader Joe’s.

my excitement was reaching this level

I chose #3.  I should mention from where I was at, it was a 3 hour drive. I  am still not quite sure why I picked number three but it was definitely a good choice.

I had a nice day!  It was fun to be on my own small adventure.  Since I’m not the most confident driver on the road, driving on the freeway freaks me out a bit.  And for good reason – I got run off of the road once this trip.  I didn’t realize there was only one lane for an exit (you could either go left for the exit I wanted or right for the one I didn’t).  I hate merging on the left!  Well, I saw to close to the actual exit that I needed to get in the other lane and no one would let me in.  So, I had to stop in the (sort of) lane that divides both of exits and then wait for a pause in traffic and gun it.

this was happening on the inside

For the record, VW bugs have a very different definition of “gunning it” than other cars but thankfully I was able to pull in front of a semi with some time to spare. I legitimately thought I would be sitting there for ages rather than minutes and panic was setting in. But all was well and I only had to deal with a few other jackass drivers.

IKEA was a success! I kind of knew what I wanted going into it as I recently checked out the website.  Of course, going through all of the rooms, I found some really cool spacing saving ideas and my list grew somewhat by the time it came to the self pick up area.  At this point, I was *fairly* confident I could fit what I wanted in my car.  I had moderately cleaned it out for my friend’s trip to the airport.  This meant, taking out some crap but leaving most of it so in reality, I was a wee bit concerned.  I headed to pick up this shelf first:

this was only $64.99... definitely a possible future purchase

Haha, I couldn’t lift it off of the shelf.  T-rex arms!  It worked in my favor though because it would NEVER have fit in my car.  Kismet.

Next, I picked up this bad boy:

kallax shelfI plan on using it for a combo nightstand and additional shelving in my bedroom.  I found this wire rack, a total steal at $24.99.  I have kitchen appliances I don’t want to get rid of but they need a new home – my kitchen floor just isn’t conducive!  These are fairly expensive at Target or other ones were too flimsy for what I need it to hold so I was pleased with this find.

omar wire shelfI found quite a few other shelving options I really liked. There was one bathroom set up with a great shelf that had hooks.  It would be perfect for my bedroom but they were out of stock.  When I got home, I realized it might not have been the best purchase right now so again, kismet.

On pinterest I saw how someone had hung a shoe rack on the back of their door so I picked up one of those as well.  Again, very handy and it even came with hooks.  A couple of other little odds and ends jumped into my cart but for the most part, I did a fantastic job of asking myself, “do you NEED this?” whenever I was tempted.  Get this: I only spent $111.00.  Win.

Next up was Trader Joe’s.  There is something about this grocery store that calms me.  I have no idea why. I think I feel like I’ve found “my people” when I shop there.  It sounds silly and I can’t explain it any other way.  Thankfully, they weren’t out of stock on these bad boys like last time, and I hooked myself up with three bags.

peanut butter treatsI am decent at adhering to portion sizes with out and only eating a serving size at a time.  It’s a hefty calorie count and I have to run 2.5 miles to burn it off however, it is so.freakin’.worth.it.

The two hour drive home was exhausting.  The two pieces of furniture are still in my car as they are heavy sonsofbeehives.  Oh and I’m lazy. My quest to organize and decrease my hoard is an ongoing process. One step closer this weekend though!

scream it from the rooftops – 15 miles! & challenge monday

This week’s challenge will be all about abs… why?  Because I need to concentrate on mine!  I’m feeling a bit dough-y and I would rather start doing something about it now rather than waiting for the stomach gnomes to sneak in my apt and tighten up my abs for me.  Oh man, wouldn’t that be awesome?!  Why can’t there be stomach gnomes?!

ain't this the truth!
ain’t this the truth!

Here is the scoop:

10 push ups

30 sit ups

10 burpees

.30 second plank

You can do this as many times as you want a day and shoot for 5 out of 7 days.  Last week’s challenge was a bit much for my legs.  So many squats on my RW runner streakin’ legs was tiring and it didn’t last long.

Speaking of which, yesterday I ran 15 miles!  Wahoo!

meagan was waiting for me to finish, although, I don't doubt I ran at a 16:45 pace at some point!

Once again, we headed out to the Kal-haven trail.  This trail always kicks my booty but Meagan was determined to help me teach IT a lesson rather than the other way around.  Meagan had e-mailed me earlier in the week to see if I wanted to do a long run together.  This morphed into an impromptu trip to IKEA, Homegoods and Trader Joe’s, with our friend Larissa.  We had a blast.

I'm mildly handy! meagan and I managed to get this puppy together fairly quickly

Love this new kitchen cart!  It was exactly what I was looking for!  Larissa has got a great eye!

Earlier in the day, my friend Emily and I checked out a HUGE craft fair in town.  There was definitely some cool stuff and I picked a couple of holiday items but I used restraint <— accomplishment for me!

Bright and early Sunday morning, Meagan and I got ready to hit the trail.  It was pretty warm and kind of misty.  Originally, I had suggested 18 miles.  Meagan asked me when the last time I had run long.  I mentioned the 9 on Tuesday and a half a “couple of weeks ago”.  Turns out it was more than a couple of weeks ago and this was a tough run for me.  Mentally, the trail feels NEVER-ENDING.  I kept thinking I had gone further than I had – bummer!  Worst feeling!

at this point I was simply concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other

This time I did bring a GU, very helpful, along with Nuun.  We made it the whole 15 in 2:50.  There was a couple of water breaks in there but none of them were longer than 20 or 30 seconds.  It was great to do a long run WITH someone!  Sometimes I forget how helpful it is to have another person there.  I probably would have wimped out at some point if Meagan hadn’t been there and she did an awesome job encouraging me.

I love this pic! I wanted to lay down in the fetal position but I love it!

So all in all a successful weekend!  I was fairly sore last night but did some stretching and will be working out some kinks with a tennis ball, baseball and a foam roller.  Who said you don’t need any supplies in running?!  Oh and once again, I had the following realization

I need to remember this!
I need to remember this!

p.s. thanks so much for snapping pics Meagan!

i didn’t drop off the face of the planet

Yowza!  It’s been DAYS since I last posted.  I wish I could say I was whisked away on a whirlwind, surprise vacation but ummm… no such luck!  Instead I have been enjoying a summer cold (boo!), countless headaches (boo again!), waiting on a text that never came (oh yeah, men kinda suck sometimes) and working.  Oh and sad – my favorite ornament was my first moving casualty

so sad… yet fitting…

Yes, none of these sound very fun and they haven’t been.  To help balance these unfortunate things I did the following:

Headed over to IKEA!  It’s about a two and half hour drive and it was fantastic!  I know many people don’t like the manufactured element of IKEA but in all sincerity it is really helping me to define my new space.  I was also selective with what I purchased.  I was nervous when I hit the showroom floor I would want to buy everything!  Just the opposite though!  It helped I had my awesome friends, Meagan and Larissa there to help navigate.

Then thankfully, Meagan say this tasty place and we decided to cap off our EXHAUSTING IKEA trip with some sugar… DELISH sugar in cupcake form :)

how do we pick?!
so we each ordered a different one and then split them in three – there was Grumpy Cake, Chubby Hubby and Tiramisu. they all rocked!

The next part of the trip was almost more than I could handle… blogger world mecca… TRADER JOE’S!  Yay!  I was completely prepared to hate Trader Joe’s and call it pretentious to anyone who would listen.  This was not the situation though.  I loved the variety of products, found the prices to be extremely fair (read: cheap!) and everyone was so polite.  It may sound dumb but the employees as well as the patrons were really nice and joked around with me about how much in awe I was of my shopping experience.  Manners and politeness go far with me and all too often I find this lacking in my shopping experiences.  The most negative thing?  It’s two and half hours away!!  Bummer!

take me to your leader!

Moving update… well, I haven’t actually moved anything yet. In fact, I keep bringing things INTO my apt rather than taking them out – this is bad form!  As I mentioned earlier, I am looking forward to crafting a space that is relaxing, a bit beachy and comfortable.  I want to bring in some elements of nature without sacrificing elements of my personality (yes, I have things that I am attached too!).  I’ve been all over the web and pinterest and I have connected on a deeper level!  Aside from IKEA, I visited Lowe’s for some succulents!  I don’t have much a green thumb, so cool looking plants that behave like cacti?  Perfect for this girl!  I’m creating little pots of them mixed together.  I like the zen-y feeling of them :)  Tomorrow I pick up my key and start to make this move happen.  Stay tuned!

the succulent I’m holding is called, “Baby Toes” – I know, kind of creepy, eh? I didn’t know this when I bought it!

Running… oh running how you vex me so!  Actually, I am being completely dramatic.  Running has been going pretty well.  Last Thursday I had a fantastic 7.5 miler.  It felt great.  The runner’s high lasted well into the next day!  The night before I walked 5 miles and the “high” from the walk certainly didn’t make me feel as good as the running one.  Some cold sickness hit after this so yesterday was my first taking it back to the streets session.  They weren’t fast miles but they were solid.  I did 4 miles and all of them were negative splits.  Yay!  I also walked a mile home after this.  Walking a mile home after running has become a norm for me and one I appreciate.  It gives me time to process my run, cool down my muscles and relax.  My legs are not as tired after running anymore and a lot of muscle soreness is gone too.  I recommend it!

Oh!  I also joined a weight loss challenge!  Check out Run with Jess!  Some are working on losing a “marathon” – 26.2 pounds and others are working on a “half” – 13.1.  Me?  I am working on these pesky 10 pounds that seem to want to be my bestie for life.  It’s been going on for a week and I have managed to shed a pound.

I’m also fascinated with the color aqua.  Obsessed would be a better word!

loving the aqua nails :)  and did you notice the aqua pot in the plant picture?!

So what am I doing about the above listed things that AREN’T going well?

1) refocusing on training and moving/getting settled.  This always helps when my personal life is on the fritz and it allows me to build my confidence after some a wee bit of (possible?!) rejection.  Also, overanalyzing is the pits!

2) I’ve rested up and getting rid of the cold

3) I put my mouth guard back in at night.  Super unattractive but my teeth feel better and I had less of a headache this morning.  Last night I woke up and I was clenching my teeth together so tightly I tasted blood.  The guard went in at this point.  Considering I’ve had a headache almost everyday for the last two weeks, this was an improvement.

4) I’m trying to glue my heart back together – I’m talking in the literal sense here.  I really like this ornament and even though it won’t look perfect I think it adds to the charm and seems to fit me and who I am all the more!
