monday randomness

Thanks for the support last week.  Thankfully, time and communication helped the situation.  I’m kind of lousy at expressing my feelings to the people in my life but I am glad I finally did.  Even if it did make me want to vomit out of nervousness!

On a lighter note, the following are some random pieces of my prior week:

1.  I was super social folks.  I know, crazypants.  Since my mom passed 3 years ago, I’ve become much more of hermit as my social anxiety essentially skyrocketed.  More and more, I’ve noticed just how much I avoid social situations.  I’m working on pushing myself but eek!  It’s not easy.  Anyway, two times were forced – I worked late and had to host candidates for my job.  But I’m totally still counting these.  Then I went to a friend’s birthday party (where I was only going to know 2 ppl – HUGE for me!) and then went to Jurassic World with a couple of friends on Sunday.  Yep.  Pretty successful social interacting business for me.

2.  Jurassic World – I really enjoyed it.  And while sitting there, one of my friends from college came on the screen!  I didn’t even know he had a role in the movie!  He did get eaten but I was rooting for him!

I love this pic - not Simon, however, Jurassic Park is Simon's favorite movie

3.  I did some running.  Two treadmill runs due to weather and they were tough – as mentioned, treadmill runs are so much harder for me.  But the other two were death marches outside.  Per my usual m.o. I stalk my weather app.  The weather looked wonderfully cool for a MI June but alas I forgot about humidity – curses!  We’ve also experienced some impressive storms as of late which was the reason for the tready.  I AM very pleased with a four day week.

4.  Paris is getting ever closer!  The bachlorette party is in Spain so this plane ticket (from Paris) has been booked and we already got part of the itinerary for the weekend. Let me tell you – it is swank!  We will be enjoying a food festival in Barcelona along with a biking tour.  Ummm… I haven’t been on a bike in 15 years!!  Haha, this just cracks me up!  Seriously, these are just two of the activities planned.  It will be a beautiful weekend.  I’m bringing my running shoes so I can run in every place we visit.

if a chimp can ride a bike, I can ride one… right?!

5.  I purchased lovely succulents, and “pixie” plants for closed-top terrariums.  I also bought a couple of other plants.  I found this local nursery and I’m kind of obsessed.  I want ALL of the plants!  I’ll do a post once I get these bad boys finished up and seriously, it has made my apt so much more homey.  It’s great.

6.  Taye Diggs started following me on Twitter.  Yes, I verified it was him.  No, I didn’t follow him first.  I’m fairly sure it was because I posted this random thing about my chicken burger.  You see, on the back of my chicken burger package, it suggests different recipes.  One of them was to add a fried egg on top, which to be honest, kind of weirded me out.  So I shared this with the twitter-verse.  Next morning, BAM! Taye Diggs!

That’s it for not – go forth and conquer your Monday!  Or at least live through it!

i’m a fragile like a potato chip

Thanks for the support with my crummy PT appt and the mean guy.  Or as Slacker Runner perfectly nicknamed him, “asshat”.  I love it!

Saturday three of my wonderful friends surprised me with a visit to help celebrate my birthday.  It was fabulous to see them since two of them live out of town and all of them have little ones.  Trying to find a weekend when we are all available is quite the experience in planning.  It was great to see them!

I had a burger at lunch – Ron would be proud!

We went to see 50 Shades of Grey (Ron would NOT be proud) – completely different from what I expected and better than I thought it would be.  Then onto a local establishment called The Kalamazoo Beer Exchange.  It’s a neat concept where they have a bunch of different beers with screens set up as the stock exchange.  The prices fluctuate based on the “market”.  We were there during the afternoon (the market wasn’t open yet) and they have some tasty grub… unless you are gluten-free/low FODMAP/can’t eat many things.  I guess I should have figured this given the whole beer theme but thankfully, we had a very kind server who helped me out.  I left her a big fat tip, since I was a bit annoying!  (I did eat some homemade potato chips there which helped to inspire parts of this post.)

this was me with my burger as I’ll explain in a moment

I also learned a very important lesson this week… Don’t put off miles you can accomplish today just because you could run tomorrow – or whatever (I’m writing this with some serious meds in my system).  Just get miles in when you can – I’m talking to myself here.  Now, I know it seems like there is always something wrong with me but it’s simply because I’m accident prone.  Or fragile.  Or something.  Look at this pic of me from kindergarten – do I look hearty to you?  Nope, and I’m still not.

Anyway, Friday morning I was getting coffee from McDonald’s and this guy rear-ended me a bit.  There was no damage to my car and really it didn’t feel like much.  I hurried onto work, where I had to carry my super heavy purse around and then scooched a couch a few feet.  At lunch, I carried my super heavy purse back to my apt.  All good.  Then, 45 mins later, I bent over to get aforementioned purse and my back seized.  I am not sure if I’ve ever felt this before but I knew it wasn’t good.  At the same time, I figured I tweaked it and I was over-reacting.

I’m a delicate potato chip that drinks coffee – naturally

It hurt.  A lot.  I went back to the office (after unloading many of the offending heavy articles from the purse) and realized the pain didn’t really go away.  It got worse as the afternoon wore on until I went home around 3:30 since I needed some meds.  Cue laying on the couch all of Friday and Sunday.  If my friends hadn’t bent over backwards to make Saturday work, I would have laid on the couch then too.  As it was, I stuffed my face with a few pills and cursed a lot in my mind.  I figured out a decent med combination (my apologies to my stomach and liver) and used some BioFreeze.  Small baby stretches seem to help momentarily, so that is good?  I also got the name of my friend’s chiropractor, who he swears by, if things don’t get better.  Currently, I’m getting my deep squats in though, since this is the only way I can reach the ground.  That’s a plus!

I have no idea if any of those morning activities impacted my current predicament or if it was simply how I bent over but man, I feel so bad for people who have chronic back problems!  Did you know how many movements require the use of your back?!  Yesterday, I utilized some peak drugged-up time to fix an oatmeal bake and get some energy bites ready for the week (more on why this is important tomorrow).  I was stirring the energy bite mixture and it made my back hurt – I wasn’t expecting this!  I am sincerely hopeful this is a fluke injury and I’ll be able to write an “all better” post soon.  That being said, I have so much sympathy for those who have constant struggles with their backs.

hopefully my recovery won’t include these shenanigans

Anyway – no running miles for the week.  I had a couple of walking miles in there but that’s it.  It’s a good reminder for me to stop trying to fit all of my training/fitness into a few days, which isn’t all that good for my body anyway.  I need to keep it more consistent so I’m not a) saving everything for the end of the week and b) not sitting on my arse for days.

***Edited:  I typically write my posts the night before.  Today, my back is a bit better but still I’m walking around like some kind of weird robot, forget bending over and pain meds are my BFFs.  I made a chiro appt for Wednesday.  I feel like a fraud/big baby though… what if there is nothing wrong?!  I don’t want to look like an idiot.  However, I can’t relax, am in pain or move very well either so I’m going with possibly looking like an idiot.  We’ll see.

ron swanson tells my running story

I’m not going to lie… I’m damn proud of myself.

While on vacation, I ran every day but two.  I even ran the day I left for WA before my flight!  One of the days I didn’t run was because we had wedding set up but I was able to incorporate a 2.5 mile walk throughout the day.  Success.  The other day was my travel back to MI day (which took 17 hours by the way – I also used ALL forms of transportation.  A car, a ferry, a train and a plane.  I really love my family.)  Were the runs exceptional?  Nope.  In fact some of them were pretty rough but I did them and it was what I needed to start kicking my buns in gear.

ron recognizes my awesomeness

I wanted to do a longer run so I decided to run from my sister’s house to her work.  The trip was going to be about 6 miles and my original plan was to run back to her house after we had lunch.  I know, I am not sure how I worked running after eating in my brain and spoiler, running back didn’t happen.  Anyway, I set out.  I left about 11:30, which was later than I intended but still was enough time to meet my sister at 12:45 pm.  It was cooler temps, *75 so I didn’t think I needed to bring water.  Why do I do this?!  Have I not learned my lesson by now?  It’s freakin’ sunny and makes it even warmer.  Ugh.

Naturally, I got lost.  There was a trail that would have made this run very scenic, cooler and 6 miles.  It is also less complicated.  However, I somehow turned the trail into the old highway and followed that instead.  I kept taking wrong turns and stopping to ask drivers for directions.  Funny thing is, people drive kind of fast on old highways so getting people to stop was tougher than I considered.

The first car I got to stop was lost as well.  They offered me a ride but I declined.  A) they were lost too, so would this really help?  B) if they were kidnappers, I don’t think I could fend off 3 people.  The next car that stopped was an older gentleman.  He also offered me a ride, along with accurrate directions and I declined that offer as well.

I continued to run.  I flagged down another truck after a while because it didn’t seem like I was going in the right direction.  Oh and get this, I had written the directions down to my sister’s office on a post it AND WAS CARRYING IT!  You know what?  This doesn’t help when you aren’t on the correct street to begin with.  Anyway, guy in truck barely slowed down so apprantely I look like a serial killer and he just yelled directions to me.

my serial killer smile?

By this time, I was frustrated, tired, hot and crazy thirsty.  I was also running out of time.  I ran another mile and half and finally came to a plant nursery that I thought I could call my sister from to come pick me up.  A woman in an expensive car (this will come into play) stopped and I asked her for directions.  She said, “do you want a ride?”.  I accepted.  I realize this isn’t proper runner protocol.  Heck, I realize accepting rides from strangers isn’t any type of proper protocol but I was done.  She was very nice and drove me my sister’s dental office… except it was the wrong one.  I felt bad so I went into the wrong one and asked to call their competion (my sister’s) and they kindly took pity on me.  They also gave me some water.  The expensive car part?  Well, I left that leather seat SWEATY!  I felt so bad so I tried to slide my butt across the seat to kind of mop it up.  Nope.  Didn’t really help.  Sorry nice lady!

did this work to distract your attention? I did the same thing to nice lady but I don’t remember what I said… maybe I just held some intense eye contact… great… now I’m the creeper…

My sister really enjoyed this story, as did my neice.  As has everyone else I’ve told it to.  Hope you did too.  All in all, I got 7 miles in that day.  I called it a win.  I also ate a super tasty sandwhich on the beach with my niece and sister and this compeltely overruled the option of running back.  Seriously, when are they going to invent a device to implant into my brain that will make sure I go in the right direction?  I get lost.all.the.time.

To conclude this post, I ran while on vacation.  I am fabulous.
